Chocolate slices are one of the most popular desserts among Slovenians. However, it is often the case that you won''t find the same one in two households, as there are so many recipe variations. This time, we present the Canadian version - Nanaimo Chocolate Slices.

Chocolate squares have become chocolate slices

Nanaimo chocolate slices are very similar to our version of this dessert, but unlike ours, they are not made in the oven. This Canadian masterpiece is traditionally made up of three layers: the base is made up of wafers and coconut pieces, the filling is made of vanilla custard and the top is a layer of chocolate custard. There are also several different recipes for Canadian scones, which differ mainly in the flavour of the filling (apart from vanilla, the flavours that Canadians love most are mint, peanut butter and coconut).

Although the recipe is said to have been around for a very long time, the first recipe was published in a cookbook in 1952 under the name ''chocolate squares'', and a year later, in another cookbook, the slices were given the name by which they are still known today - Nanaimo Chocolate Slices. They are still known by many different names, but the name has remained so familiar because in 1986 , Nanaimo housewife Joyce Hardcastle won the local best dessert competition with this recipe. Since then, Hardcastle has been the face of Nanaimo chocolate slices.

Make Nanaimo Chocolate Slices without baking

You''ll love the recipe below because it requires no baking. It will take you some time to prepare (about 2 hours), but the end product is well worth the effort. If you follow the recipe below, you will be able to enjoy a base made from a combination of butter, cocoa powder, crushed hazelnuts, crushed biscuits and coconut, and a filling of vanilla cream, topped with a layer of melted chocolate.

  • electric mixer
  • spatula
  • baking tray 20 cm in diameter
  • baking paper
  • transparent food foil
  • sharp knife

Ingredients:

ingredients for the base:

  • ½ cup butter
  • ¼ cup crystal sugar
  • 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 large cup crushed biscuits (preferably made with graham flour)
  • ½ cup chopped hazelnuts (can also be almonds or walnuts)
  • 1 cup coconut flakes

  • ½ cup butter, warmed to room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons and 2 teaspoons vanilla pudding
  • 2 tablespoons and 2 teaspoons whipping cream with at least 35% fat
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

ingredients for the dressing:

  • 170 g grated semi-sweet chocolate
  • 3 tablespoons butter

Instructions:

Bottom preparation:

Beat the eggs with an electric mixer, then melt the butter, cocoa powder and sugar in a large saucepan over a pan of simmering water and stir until smooth. Carefully add the eggs and vanilla sugar to this mixture and stir until the ingredients are well combined.

Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the crushed biscuits, coconut and chopped hazelnuts (almonds or walnuts can be used). Put the mixture in a baking tray lined with baking paper and spread it evenly, pressing it with your fingers towards the base. Cover the baking tray with transparent cling film and place it in the fridge for 1 hour.

While the bottom is cooling, beat the butter in a bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Add the vanilla pudding, whipping cream and icing sugar and beat until the filling is light. Spread over the cooled base, then place the baking tray in the fridge for 30 minutes.

preparation of the dressing:

Melt the chocolate and butter in a water bath to make the topping smooth and shiny. Cool slightly, then spread the topping over the filling with a spatula and leave to cool for 10 minutes.

Slice with a sharp knife and serve. Have a good run!
